How To Relocate The Right Way

Posted on December 18, 2020June 17, 2022 by Contributing Writer

Relocating to a new city or state can be stressful. There are many things to consider before taking the relocation leap. Some things to take into consideration are the climate, the cost of living, the people, and recreation opportunities of the new location. All of these are important especially when relocating to an unknown area. If you can, try to visit the city to get a feel for the area. If you’re unable to visit, do as much research as you can prior to making the move. You want to make sure the new location can eventually feel like home. Relocating for a new position or career can be challenging and rewarding. However, making the wrong leap can cause regret and dissatisfaction.

There are some items to consider when contemplating the new position. Will the relocation and position advance your career? Are you able to take advantage of the personal growth along with the professional growth? Relocating allows growth in the ways of building relationships, showing independence and willingness to change, meeting and networking with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and learning to adapt outside of your current comfort zone. Relocating for a new position can be fun and exciting, especially when the employer is footing the bill. If the new employer is not offering relocation assistance or a recruitment incentive, it’s best to have enough savings to cover your moving, deposits, and expenses for at least 2 pay periods.

Other items to consider which can make or break the relocation are the weather, cost of living, the commute, and recreation. What is the weather like? Is it overly hot and humid or will the rain and snow last forever? What is the cost of living compared to your current location? Will safe and centrally located housing and utilities break the budget? Conduct internet searches to determine what you can expect to pay and receive for housing. If you have children, how good are the public schools or can you afford private schools? Where will you live in proximity to school and work? If you will use public transportation, is it safe and reliable? If you have a personal vehicle, check the cost of registration and insurance at the new location. Is street parking safe or will you need a more secure garage? Recreation becomes very important if you’re moving alone and will need to establish new relationships. Are there parks, trails, or gyms nearby? Look for social activities you can take part in when you’re not working.

There are many who never leave the 50-mile radius from their childhood neighborhood. However, there are others who have mastered the art of relocating, living, and adapting in different cities, states, and countries. Relocating to start or advance your career can be an opportunity of a lifetime if done correctly.
